1. today i’m listening to the new dave king trucking company record.  it’s really solid jazz.  king is, as always, at the absolute top of the line as far as the percussion is concerned.  i’m not as familiar with the rest of the musicians on the recording, but i’m really enjoying the guitar lines and both saxophones.  i haven’t gotten a chance to listen on a big stereo or with nice headphones, but the bass sounds pretty great even with this dinky ipod dock stereo.  ’hawk over traffic,’ the albums longest track at 10:05, is my favorite piece.  most of all, this record hits that perfect border between chaos and control that i look for in contemporary jazz.  i like both sides of the border on occasion, but my favorite recordings are almost always right in between.. tapping into both insanity and careful, restrained composition.
